I hope that 2017 is off to a good start for you.

I was fortunate enough to spend the first week of this brand spanking new year on a beautiful beach in a different part of the world with my wife, a beach that already seems not quite real. Especially as I write this from the F concourse at O’Hare, hoping I will make it home tonight despite the freezing rain coming down on the other side of the window I am sitting next to.

On any given day, my wife and I have 3 kids and at least 3 animals at home, and we are both business owners, so the two of us do not just slip away for a week very often.

It was glorious.

I am reminded that rest is important, distance and quiet are important.

I think that we need more.

It seems to me, in January of 2017, that we live in a time of great consequence. It seems to me that there are big and complex questions and challenges hurtling rapidly toward us…and I think we need to be on top of our game.

While adrenaline and drive and passion can compensate in the short term, there is no substitute for real rest. Distance. Quiet. Maybe even a glorious bit of boredom!

Thanks to the supercomputer in our pocket, we carry the entire world with us everywhere we go. All of the people, all of the problems, all of the noise. So much noise.

What do you do to rest?

Get some rest. Prioritize your well-being, pull out your calendar right now and block off some time for yourself.
